THE SURF AND BEACHES
The beaches and surfbreaks in the immediate area around Bingin Villas are amongst Bali’s finest and you really will be spoilt for choice and things to do.
Right in front of the villas on the beach is one of the most mechanical waves in Bali. Bingin a constant left hand wave, set in front of a white sand bay, that hosts a great number of restaurants and warungs. To the east you have a very quiet and secluded beach, where Bingin Righthanders will work on a big swell, and further around to the east, is the very popular Dreamland beach, which might be a bit to busy for most these days. To the west an easy walk will get you to Impossible, which is located in front of a rocky beaches with rock pools and boulders that provide unique hangout areas for people to enjoy their own space (with a few walking surfers that will pass).
Bingin and Impossibles surf breaks flanked on the South by Padang Padang, and Uluwatu, and on the North by Dreamlands and Balangan, is a virtual wonderland of world class surf. The beaches, at low tide, offer some of the best tide pool discoveries and private coves and grottos. At high tide, swimming and snorkeling are in calm waters embraced by the outer reef. A short ride on a motorbike or by car gets you to world famous Padang Padang, and Ulu Watu. Both these premier world surf breaks offer pristine beaches.
Best Times: May to November
Impossibles surf break is about 250 meters long. On a given day, when the conditions are right, 6 to 10 foot surf can be ridden all the way through, making the paddle back to the lineup long enough to let others get their turn. Smaller days, six foot or less, offer so many places to get in and out , that it takes a lot of people to crowd it up. The wave is very forgiving, and rewarding, which makes it a great ego builder of the novice or the elderly, as well as the 'mental' chargers.
Padang Padang beach is one of Bali’s most sacred beaches, by story that it is the first place that Hindus, chased from Java, came ashore on the Island. It's a small and glorious pocket of sand, romantically accessed through a large crack in the headland. The surf there, is frequented by body boarders when it is below six feet. A much more serious mood accompanies it when the swell gets bigger. One of the Earth’s most reveered barrel rides, commanding a serious commitment when you are taking off, to get to see the real show behind the curtain. The reward is an unforgettable view.
Best Times: May to November
Ulu Watu is Bali’s most famous break. The beach is a series of three tight coves, and there are many ‘warungs’ (small shops), offering booties and wetsuits, a wide variety of other stuff, including boards for rent and sale, as well as food and drinks. The surf is everything it can be; small peaks and short rides, the barrels of a lifetime, and long gorgeous perfect walls, lined up on larger days for longer rides. While Ulu is not a beginner type of layout, often enough, it is frequented by kooks and beginners who don’t really belong there, but need to go home with their “I surfed Ulu” badge. Gotta get there at first light, or on dark to know the true magic and peace of this place.
Best Times: May to November
Bingin beach is about a kilo in length, and is spotted with boulders at either end. Bingin’s famous barrel, short and sweet, is a micro model of the wave at Padang Padang, without the lump in the throat commitment. Many novice surfers begin their barrel riding attempts at Bingin because of its closeness to the beach, and its forgiving wipeouts. When everyone gets into the water, around mid-day, it can get quite packed, but is always worth the wait when you get one.
Just down the beach, is Dreamlands break, a bit more of a learning wave, which can get some snap to it , on the bigger days.
